THURGOOD MARSHALL COLLEGE FUND STATEMENT ON BIPARTISAN TWO-YEAR BUDGET AND DEBT CEILING DEAL

Calls on Congres to now focus on passing the FUTURE Act

WASHINGTON, DC (July 23, 2019) – “The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) thanks and congratulates President Trump, Speaker Pelosi, Minority Leader McCarthy, Majority Leader McConnell and Minority Leader Schumer on reaching a bipartisan deal to raise the debt ceiling and avoid budget cuts which would have been hurtful to higher education.

Now that this critical hurdle has cleared, we implore Congress to focus on the passage of the FUTURE Act before September 30th. The Fostering Undergraduate Talent by Unlocking Resources for Education (FUTURE) Act provides continued support for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and other minority-serving institutions of higher education through funding currently set to expire at the end of the Fiscal Year 2019. The expiration of these funds (Title III-Part F) would mean an $85 million shortfall for HBCUs. The funds provided for in this legislation can be utilized for capital improvement needs, as well as faculty and curriculum development and student services.

HBCUs and other minority servicing institutions play a critical role in educating underserved populations in our country; it is imperative for Congress to continue investing in our institutions which play a vital role in our nation’s economic prosperity.” Harry L. Williams, president & CEO, TMCF
