HEROES ACT Provides $1.7 Billion in Emergency Aid to HBCUs, PBIs and other MSIs
WASHINGTON, DC (May 12, 2020) – The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) extends its sincere thanks to Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Leadership for introducing another important piece of legislation that responds to the particularized challenges that HBCUs, PBIs and other MSIs are facing in the wake of the COVID-19 health emergency.
“In order to prevent potentially irreparable harm to our nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Predominantly Black Institutions, bold action must be taken at the federal level now,” said Harry L. Williams, President and CEO of TMCF. “The plan introduced today which would provide an additional $1.7 billion in direct aid to HBCUs, PBIs and other MSIs, $500 billion in state aid that could potentially mitigate massive funding cuts to post-secondary education at the state level, and an additional $90 billion in state education grants is precisely the type of investment in education that these unprecedented times demand. We hope that leaders in both houses of Congress and the administration come together soon, in a bi-partisan fashion, to agree on a relief plan that allows our nation’s HBCUs and PBIs to not only survive, but thrive post-pandemic and long into the future.”
