From scholar to student leader: How TMCF empowered Jasmine Jackson to lead at ECSU

November 26, 2025

Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) junior Jasmine Jackson says the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) not only shaped her professional growth but also inspired her to step into leadership, ultimately motivating her to run for student body president.

“TMCF is an all-inclusive platform for students,” Jackson said. “It has helped me with my finances, resources, professional development and networking skills. They provide connections that can branch off into so many different avenues. It’s an all-in-one support system that opens doors to other universities, people, scholarships and internships. It’s a huge connector for HBCU students.”

Through the support and skills she gained from attending TMCF’s DevCon in 2023 and 2024 and Leadership Institute in 2025, Jackson said she felt fully prepared to run for student body president. These experiences not only inspired her to pursue the position but also gave her the confidence and tools to succeed once she was elected.

“DevCon played a pivotal role in my life and taught me about advocacy, leadership, service and the importance of networking,” she said. “Those lessons directly shaped how I approach my responsibilities as president.”

At Leadership Institute, Jackson also received the book “Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff,” which she now uses as a guide to navigate the challenges of leadership and maintain balance in her priorities as SGA president.

“At the professional development conferences, I gained information that I could immediately apply once I returned to campus,” she said. “I left inspired with a new mindset and a stronger desire to give back, lead and encourage my peers to step into leadership, as well.”

Looking ahead, Jasmine hopes to continue using the leadership and professional development skills she gained through TMCF to empower her peers and inspire many generations to come.
