November 20, 2025

Day two of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) Workforce Development Summit brought corporate partners and scholars together for enlightening plenaries about preparing for success.

To begin the day, TMCF Chief Programs Officer Tamara Thompson talked to students about embracing discomfort.

“Getting uncomfortable means that you’re getting yourself out of your comfort zone,” Thompson said. “You’re stretching yourself. You’re driving yourself further and that’s important. So if you’re feeling uncomfortable, that’s okay. We have people here to help you in those uncomfortable moments, because we want you to maximize this opportunity.”

The Friday afternoon plenary was presented by Toyota and titled “Your Path, Your Power: Transfer or Trade – Making the Right Move.” Students also enjoyed a dress for success fashion show and a scholarship presentation. HBCC alumni hosted a panel discussion called “HBCC Alumni Real Talk” that shared life, academic and professional wisdom with students.

In the evening, a plenary presented by TEKsystems titled “Showing Up is the Strategy: Building Presence, Credibility and Influence in Your Career,” followed by a Q&A.

Throughout the day, students also attended breakout sessions about building relationships, gaining skills employers want, and moving from scholarships to skillsets. Students also had the opportunity to have a professional headshot made, get help with resume preparation or work on professional communication.

At the close of day two, attendees looked ahead to the career and transfer fair coming up on day three.
