Presidents for Historically Black Colleges and Universities returned to Washington for their second annual conference on Capitol Hill Tuesday, unable to cite more than a few measurable victories in the year since Congressional Republicans and the new Trump White House promised to promote and support the institutions.
WASHINGTON, DC – (March 2, 2018) – The Vivian Burey Marshall Academy (VBMA) was awarded the Governor’s Award for Exemplary Partnerships by the Mississippi Association of Partners in Education.
Vicksburg Warren School district, along with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center, Alcorn State, Jackson State and the Vivian Burey Marshall Academy, also won a Governor’s Award for Exemplary Partnerships.
Many present at that February 2017 meeting reunited this Tuesday at an event announcing John C. Taylor Jr. as chairman of a White House advisory board on HBCUs, where Trump reiterated his commitment to HBCUs as “a major priority of our administration.”
HBCU leaders this week got a chance to reacquaint members of Congress and administration officials with their priorities at the Hill event organized by Senator Tim Scott, a South Carolina Republican, and Representative Mark Walker, a North Carolina Republican.
Johnny C. Taylor Jr. will be chairman of the President’s Board of Advisors on Historically Black Colleges and Universities, a group of more than 100 institutions that were created at a time when most universities did not allow minorities to enroll.
