July 22, 2019

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, DC (July 30, 2018) – The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) hosted educators from Maryland and Mississippi at the 3rd Annual TMCF Teacher Fellow Summit. During the six-day summit held July 22-28 in Houston, TX, participants engaged in professional development, educational enrichment, and STEM competition preparation workshops.

Additionally, teaching and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professionals attended to help facilitate workshops and prepare the fellows to work with the Vivian Burey Marshall Academy (VBMA) scholars for the upcoming year during their national STEM competitions and enrichment activities sponsored by and in collaboration with the U.S. Army.

“As a second-year teacher fellow, coming to the summit again was a rewarding and refreshing experience,” said Benjamin Battle II of Vicksburg, MS. ”I left more excited about what is to come this upcoming year, and I truly feel blessed to be a part of such a rewarding program.”

The Vivian Burey Marshall Academy (VBMA) is a partnership through the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) and the U.S. Army. This initiative provides students from the Baltimore, MD, and Vicksburg, MS communities with access to a variety of Army-sponsored science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs that engages and inspires the next generation of K-12 talent.

“I always enjoy having the opportunity to work with our in-service teachers to provide them with new strategies to support our scholars,” said Dawna Taylor-Thornton, VBMA executive director and principal investigator. “Our middle and high school VBMA scholars work in an environment that strongly promotes inquiry-based learning and project-based learning which requires a different mindset from our teachers than what we typically see in classrooms.”
