While the number of undergraduate students dropped since the pandemic, applications at HBCUs increased nearly 30% as students reported turning down Ivy League institutions and other PWIs for a more inclusive experience. Research has shown that unmet financial need is higher among underrepresented minority and low-income students and can negatively impact first- and second-year retention.
