A Legacy of Leadership

For 40 years, the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) has stood as the premier partner to the Black college community. We launched our mission with conviction: that historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are not just institutions of higher learning — they are the engines of economic mobility, cultural preservation and social justice.

From the historic steps of the Supreme Court to the high-tech boardrooms of the Fortune 500, our scholars write the TMCF legacy through their success. This movement began with a vision to provide equity in education has evolved into a national movement, shifting paradigms and redefining what leadership looks like in a global economy.

Four Decades of Direct Impact

Our 40-year story isn't just about the passage of time; it’s about the measurable transformation of lives, campuses and industries. We have turned aspirations into generational wealth through three foundational pillars:

Empowering Dreams

  • The Investment: We have delivered more than $700 million in life-changing financial support to scholars since our founding.
  • The Transformation: We don't just bridge the financial gap; we help erase it. By alleviating the burden of student debt, we ensure that brilliant minds can focus on innovation, research and graduation rather than financial survival.

Building Pipelines

  • The Investment: We engineer intentional, institutional pathways that connect world-class talent with global industry leaders.
  • The Transformation: Through signature initiatives like the Leadership Institute, we ensure our scholars don't just get a seat at the table — they are prepared to lead it. We serve as the ultimate bridge between the raw brilliance found on HBCU campuses and the workforce demands of the Fortune 500.

Championing Justice

  • The Investment: We uphold our namesake’s iconic legacy by removing systemic barriers to higher education.
  • The Transformation: In the spirit of Justice Thurgood Marshall, we advocate on Capitol Hill, fund groundbreaking institutional research and build capacity within our 57 member schools. We protect, defend and elevate the ecosystem of HBCU higher education.

The Next Chapter: Beyond the 40th Milestone

As we celebrate 40 years of transformative impact, we are not just looking back at where we have been — we are anchoring ourselves for where we are going. The challenges facing our students and institutions are evolving, and so are we.

We are scaling our technology initiatives, expanding our corporate coalitions and deepening our investment in institutional capacity. Because at TMCF, we know that supporting Black excellence is not a momentary reaction to the times. It is a permanent, unstoppable movement.

TOGETHER, WE'RE NOT JUST CELEBRATING 40 YEARS. WE'RE BUILDING THE NEXT 40.

About TMCF

The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) is named for Thurgood Marshall, the U.S. Supreme Court’s first African American justice. It was established in 1987 under the leadership of Dr. N. Joyce Payne in cooperation with Miller Brewing Co., Sony Music, the NBA, Reebok and the American Association for State Colleges and Universities. TMCF supports and represents more than 314,000 students attending its 57 member schools, including publicly supported historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), predominantly Black institutions (PBIs), historically Black community colleges (HBCC), medical schools and law schools.

TMCF is the country’s largest champion of the Black college community. Through TMCF, students and graduates continue the fight for access, equity and inclusion while building a more diverse talent pipeline and workforce in corporate America. TMCF has continued the legacy of Justice Marshall for more than three decades to provide direct resources to HBCUs, nurture and advance Black talent in the workforce and create a more equitable society that will provide economic mobility for Black students and their communities.

TMCF offers pathways to economic mobility and lucrative careers to build the next generation of Black leaders. TMCF’s scholarship program provides financial support to help bridge the racial wealth gap and reduce debt for low-to-middle-income Black students who already disproportionately shoulder the strain of student borrowing.

TMCF connects high-performing, career ready students with top-tier employment opportunities. To date, TMCF has awarded more than $700 million in assistance to its students and member schools. Many TMCF member-school graduates have become leaders in the business, government and entertainment industries. These achievements wouldn’t have been possible without the support of TMCF and its generous financial partners.
