TMCF Achieves Four-Star Rating From Charity Navigator

November 1, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Thurgood Marshall College Fund has achieved a Four-Star charity rating for the seventh consecutive year from Charity Navigator, the leading non-profit accountability group.

TMCF’s score of 96 percent is the highest it has achieved since Charity Navigator initiated its 2.1 rating system that focuses on Impact & Results, Accountability & Finance, Culture & Community, and Leadership & Adaptability. In this latest update, 5,954 organizations have been scored on three or more beacons, a more than 50 percent increase. Based on a survey among Charity Navigator donors, 80 percent would rather donate to a four-star charity with all four beacons compared to one beacon.

“These objective ratings indicate that TMCF is the leading national organization serving the Black College Community, and our focus on program outcomes and accountability are critical,” TMCF President and CEO Harry Williams said.

TMCF advances the nearly 90-year work of Justice Thurgood Marshall, a double HBCU grad, pioneering civil rights lawyer and first Black Supreme Court Justice. Through its work, TMCF has continued Justice Marshall’s legacy for over three decades to provide direct resources to HBCUs, nurture and advance Black talent in the work force and create a more equitable society that will provide economic mobility for Black students and their communities.

Among some of the highlights this year for TMCF was raising over $5 million during its annual “Leaders and Legends” fundraising gala, being named as a Top Workplace in the northeast region by the Washington Post and partnering with the Descendants Truth & Reconciliation Foundation to provide educational advancement opportunities to Descendants of Jesuit and Catholic slaveholding in the United States.

TMCF also continues to enjoy a Platinum rating from GuideStar, another leading non-profit accountability group, which reviews Programs, Results + Financials and Organizational Governance.
