Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) representatives toured the Utica campus of Hinds Community College (HCC) in Mississippi as part of a site visit for possible inclusion as a member school.
The Utica campus was formerly Utica Junior College, but merged with HCC in 1982. The campus still retains its historically Black college and university (HBCU) designation. It was founded in 1903 as Utica Normal and Industrial Institute and is the oldest of HCC’s six locations.
TMCF President & CEO Dr. Harry L. Williams was interviewed by HCC students on WHUC News 7 show “REAL Talk” during the visit.
“My visit has been absolutely amazing,” Dr. Williams said on the show. “I’m just blown away with the hospitality in Utica, Mississippi. It’s my first time here and the people have treated me with a great deal of respect and hospitality.”
Dr. Williams also said he was impressed with the campus community, faculty, staff and the commitment he saw firsthand. He also explained some of the functions of TMCF, such as providing scholarships, leadership development and pathways to internships, jobs and careers.
WHUC also produced a news segment on the site visit, featuring footage from the tour and commentary from Dr. Williams.
“We saw some incredible facilities and some incredible students. We’re excited about this potential new partnership with the Utica campus,” Dr. Williams said.
