Thurgood Marshall College Fund Statement on TMCF Member-School Receiving $11M Federal Government Recovery Grant

July 22, 2019

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, DC (August 29, 2018) – The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) thanks Members of Congress, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and other senior Education Department officials for working together to award TMCF member-school University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) with a $11,174,154 grant to assist with campus recovery efforts following the damaging impacts of Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017.

TMCF remains committed to ensuring that UVI gains the ability to apply for participation in the deferral option for their HBCU Capital Finance Loans, much like the private institutions who participate in the HBCU Capital Finance Program are, and that the UVI School of Medicine be added as a Historically Black Graduate Institution in the next reauthorization of the Higher Education Act. These measures would help to further strengthen the institution and further solidify UVI’s role as an economic engine for the Virgin Islands.

Bipartisan engagement is key to achieving results and TMCF will continue to advocate for UVI and the rest of our 47 member-schools.

Note: Dr. Harry L. Williams, TMCF president & CEO, is available for further comment.
