Thurgood Marshall College Fund Statement on the Passing of Congressman John Lewis

July 19, 2020

Washington, DC (July 18, 2020) – It is with great sadness that all at the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) recognize the passing of American civil rights icon and moral compass, Congressman John Lewis. A stalwart of the civil rights movement and former leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), Congressman Lewis was an ardent supporter of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

“It is with a very heavy heart that I extend my sincere condolences to the family of Congressman John Lewis on his untimely passing. Like Thurgood Marshall himself, John Lewis was one of the giants of the American civil rights movement of the 20th Century and his unrelenting effort to get into ‘good trouble’ helped transform our nation for the better and make that arc of the moral universe not as steep”, said TMCF President and CEO, Harry L. Williams. “The recent upheavals in our nation are a testament to the fact that Congressman Lewis’ fight is not over, and I sincerely hope that his mantle will be picked up by a new generation of leaders who will continue his struggle for justice and equity for all Americans.”
