Thurgood Marshall College Fund president spoke to students at the HBCU Career Development Marketplace

Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) President & CEO Dr. Harry L. Williams recently spoke to students attending the HBCU Career Development Marketplace at TMCF member school Coppin State University.

Dr. Williams spoke to the assembled audience of approximately 400 students about what employers are looking for: tech-savvy graduates with soft skills and a work ethic.

“Just by being here, you’re taking the right steps toward gaining the tools you need to succeed in the job market,” Dr. Williams said in his address.

He encouraged students to invest the time to learn the technical skills needed in their respective fields, but not to forget soft skills like communication, empathy, problem solving and teamwork.

“Employers want to know you can interact with others, manage relationships and lead,” Dr. Williams said. “They want you to think critically, make informed decisions and handle hard things with resilience and grace.”

He also emphasized the importance of a strong work ethic.

“Your work ethic is going to set you apart from other employees or job candidates,” he said. “It shows employers that you’ll go the extra mile, you’re dependable and you’ll follow through even if challenges come up.”

Dr. Williams said a work ethic is not just about working longer hours or being available.

“It’s about working with purpose and integrity. Showing up on time. Meeting deadlines. Holding yourself accountable,” he said. “That’s what’s going to separate you from having a job or having a career.”

He concluded by sharing his seven keys to leading a successful life: faith, family, passion for your work, setting big goals, being humble, being ready to say yes and getting up every day with a positive attitude.
