A new series of events called Workforce Development Place-Based Trainings (PBTs) are making a big impact for students attending institutions in the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) network.
As part of its ongoing commitment to preparing students for the workforce and deepening employer partnerships, TMCF conducted PBTs at Shelton State Community College, Drake State Community & Technical College and St. Philip’s College in April.
During the event, historically Black community college (HBCC) students learned about careers, explored pathways that felt tangible and sharpened their professional skills.
“Place-Based Trainings are an excellent way to meet students where they are,” Dr. Harry L. Williams, president & CEO of TMCF, said. “The response from our students and campus and corporate partners has been outstanding.”
Dr. Williams said the shift reflects TMCF’s focus on expanding access and creating more intentional, regionally aligned opportunities for engagement between students and external partners.
“Through the new model, our employer partners have the opportunity to connect with our students in more intentional ways, aligned to workforce needs and geographic priorities,” Dr. Williams said.
TMCF invited HBCCs to join as member institutions in 2023.
“Adding community colleges to our membership is part of an intentional move toward a more inclusive talent strategy. A four-year degree is one path but not the only path to career success,” Dr. Williams said in the announcement of the first campuses to join the organization.
