Washington, DC (July 23, 2015) – Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) announces a $500,000 donation from Lowe’s to assist students attending publicly-supported Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). This grant will assist graduating seniors in need of financial support to complete their final course requirements.

“Even in their last year, thousands of college students face the possibility of not graduating due to financial difficulties and a lack of financial resources to pay for that last year or semester,” said TMCF President & CEO Johnny C. Taylor Jr. “With partners like Lowe’s, students can look to TMCF as a lifeline to helping them fulfill their college dreams.”

Andra Bates, University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff biology major, was a student in this very dilemma in 2014. Bates needed additional financial assistance to cover his tuition costs so he could complete his graduation requirements.

“I extend my sincerest gratitude to the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and Lowe’s for the scholarship I received for the 2014-2015 academic year,” Bates said. “With your support I could stand on Justice Marshall’s legacy and was able to realize my college dreams.”

Lowe’s has donated more than $5 million to national partners since 2009 to support minority education. For the past five years, Lowe’s has partnered with TMCF to fund scholarships for more than 150 students.

“Lowe’s recognizes the value of education in building future leaders,” said Joan Higginbotham, Lowe’s director of community relations. “We’re proud to continue our partnership with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund to provide the critical assistance students need to graduate and achieve their full potential.”

Grant funding and individual giving from partners like Lowe’s enables TMCF to continue to build programs that help students get the most from their education and provide opportunities to become part of a new generation of global leaders. This $500,000 donation brings Lowe’s contributions to TMCF to more than $1 million.

“Lowe’s has been a loyal supporter of TMCF for years and their continued partnership shows their commitment to education, but, more importantly, a dedication to creating the workforce of tomorrow,” said Taylor.
