Jackson State University graduate is pursuing law school to make change

August 29, 2025

A recent Jackson State University (JSU) graduate and Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) scholar chose to pursue law school at the Southern University Law Center (SULC).

Caleab Pickens, a 2025 graduate of JSU and a student at SULC, said his decision to attend law school was fueled by a lifelong commitment to justice and service.

“Growing up in Jackson, Mississippi, I witnessed disparities that left lasting impressions on me — from public health inequities to legal injustices,” Pickens said. “Law school is my path to amplify unheard voices, especially those who come from stories like mine.”

Pickens has been heavily involved with TMCF, earning scholarships through the organization in collaboration with the United Health Foundation and Cargill

“These scholarships allowed me to focus fully on my academics and service without the constant pressure of financial strain,” Pickens said. “More than just financial support, they reminded me that someone believes in my potential and is investing in my future. That kind of backing builds confidence and keeps you going, especially when the journey gets tough.”

He also attended Leadership Institute in 2023 and 2024 and served as a yard ambassador from 2023 until 2025.

Some of the best memories from his experience with TMCF are from Leadership Institute.

“The energy in that space — being surrounded by HBCU excellence from across the country — was unforgettable,” Pickens said. “I remember standing in front of recruiters from top companies, confidently sharing my story and goals, and realizing, ‘I belong here.’”

Pickens also deeply valued his time as a yard ambassador.

“That role gave me the opportunity to represent my campus proudly, connect with prospective students and serve as a leader among my peers,” Pickens said. “But even more than the platform, it gave me lifelong friendships and a network that feels like family. The connections I made through that experience — and through TMCF — reminded me that success doesn’t happen alone. I’m grateful to have a village that continues to push me forward.”

His goal after law school is to begin his legal career as in-house counsel or in big law, with the long-term goal of serving as general counsel for a major corporation.

“But no matter where I practice, I plan to stay grounded in purpose by offering pro bono legal support in civil rights, family and juvenile law,” Pickens said. “I want to be a legal professional who leads with both impact and intention — building a successful career while also showing up for those who often don’t have access to legal representation.”

He said TMCF has been a critical part of his academic and professional journey.

“TMCF has been more than a support system — it’s been a launchpad,” Pickens said. “From attending the Leadership Institute to receiving scholarships, every touchpoint with TMCF has been intentional and impactful. The organization helped me sharpen my professional presence, expand my network and think more boldly about what’s possible for me as a future attorney, leader and advocate. TMCF has helped bridge the gap between my dreams and the resources I need to reach them.”
