Associate Vice President of Major Gifts

Job Description

Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) is the nation’s largest organization exclusively representing the black college community. TMCF member-schools include the publicly supported Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and several Predominantly Black Institutions (PBIs). The Associate Vice President of Major Gifts is a senior fundraising professional responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding high-net-worth individuals capable of making transformative gifts, typically in the range of $250,000 and above. This strategic role is central to advancing the organization’s mission by securing philanthropic investments that drive long-term growth and impact.

Chief Development Officer

Responsibilities:

Donor Cultivation & Solicitation:

  • Build and manage a dynamic portfolio of HNWI prospects.
  • Develop and implement individualized engagement strategies for each prospect.
  • Conduct at least 100 meaningful prospect interactions annually.
  • Prepare compelling proposals and presentations aligned with donor interests and organizational priorities.
  • Work in close partnership with colleagues and senior leadership to facilitate high-level donor engagement and solicitations.

Strategic Leadership:

  • Serve as a thought partner in the development of the principal gifts strategy.
  • Collaborate with advancement colleagues on cross-team initiatives including campaign planning, donor recognition, and stewardship programs.
  • Act as the development lead for Impact Now events.

Data Management and Reporting:

  • Ensure timely, tailored stewardship plans for all principal donors.
  • Track outcomes and deliver impact reports in collaboration with program and finance teams.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of all donor interactions using the CRM system.
  • Utilize data insights to refine strategies and forecast revenue.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Manage and direct at least one fundraising professional (senior manager, individual giving)
  • Make recommendations for future staffing needs

Position Mandatories:

  • Travel required: 25%

Required Competencies and Qualifications:

  •  Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 7–10 years of progressively responsible experience in major or principal gift fundraising, preferably in higher education, healthcare, or a complex nonprofit environment.
  • Proven success in securing 6- and 7-figure gifts.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Strategic thinker with high emotional intelligence and discretion.
  • Comfortable working in a metrics-driven environment and traveling regularly.
