College costs keep rising every year, so much so that the idea of putting one’s self through college — or even two parents being able to do so for their child — is virtually unheard of anymore. Given that reality, any help students can get is more than welcome. And it’s time now for HBCU juniors to apply for the Apple HBCU Scholarship Program to get the help they need.
The scholarship is offered to eligible college students who are in their final year of college at an HBCU institution and are majoring in Computer Science, Information Science/Technology, Mathematics, and/or Engineering, and is a result of a partnership between the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) and Apple.
The Apple HBCU Scholars Program is open to outstanding students with a minimum 3.25 GPA who will be graduating between December 2017 and May 2018. Selected Scholars will participate in a 12-week internship during the summer before their senior year, and will receive up to $25,000 in scholarship funding based on individual financial needs that will be applied to their final year of study. Each scholar will have an Apple mentor throughout their experience, receive an opportunity to develop key skills, enhance their resumes and help launch their careers through the hands-on experience gained at one of the top tech companies in the world.
Those who receive the scholarship, which was designed to assist academically strong students pursuing careers in technology and who are attending full-time a four-year accredited HBCU/PBI (Predominately Black Institution), will participate in a 12-week summer internship with Apple in Cupertino, California. They will also attend the TMCF Annual Leadership Institute in Washington, D.C. in November as well as be mentored by an Apple employee during their senior year and participate in development programs to help recipients prepare for their careers.
The deadline to apply is October 16, 2016, 11:59 EST, and the award amount of $25,000 is “funding based on individual financial needs that will be applied to their final year of study,” according to the TMCF website. Scholarship recipients will also serve as Ambassadors on their HBCU or PBI campuses to boost awareness for the Apple and TMCF HBCU Initiative.
