From scholarships to national professional opportunities, Raniyah Edwards’ experience with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) has helped shape her growth as a student leader.
A junior political science major at Prairie View A&M University, Edwards is an out-of-state student who has been actively engaged with TMCF since her freshman year. During that time, she has received multiple scholarships, participated in the Adobe Immersion program and served as a speaker at DevCon. She also attended Leadership Institute, where she was later selected as a student speaker at the 38th Anniversary Gala.
Edwards said those opportunities allowed her to grow as a leader while expanding her professional network. Leadership Institute, in particular, stood out for the connections she was able to make.
“TMCF has provided multiple professional opportunities,” Edwards said. “I wouldn’t be the scholar or working professional I am today without TMCF.”
As a first-generation college student, Edwards said the professional development she gained through TMCF has been especially meaningful, helping her confidently navigate spaces she may not have otherwise accessed.
One moment that clearly demonstrated TMCF’s impact came when Edwards was flown out for an interview with Wells Fargo for a public policy internship. She said the opportunity was made possible through connections she built through TMCF.
“TMCF staff reviewed my resume and helped me refine my pitch before the interview,” Edwards said. “They made sure I had what I needed to succeed.”
Edwards also credits the TMCF community for continually motivating her. Surrounded by peers earning fellowships, internships and leadership opportunities, she said the environment pushes her to aim higher.
“Everyone is blazing their own path,” Edwards said. “I’m a stronger student because of the people I’m connected with through TMCF.”
Reflecting on her experience, Edwards said the collective drive of TMCF scholars has been one of the most powerful aspects of her journey.
“Every time I walk into a room of TMCF scholars, it’s like iron sharpens iron,” she said. “With TMCF, all roads lead to success.”
