Finding her voice: How Chloe Foster turned adversity into leadership

November 26, 2025

After a concussion left her uncertain about her future, Lincoln University of Pennsylvania (Lincoln University) senior Chloe Foster found renewed confidence and clarity through the  Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF). With that support, she has grown into a strong campus leader while balancing athletics, academics and public speaking.

“Freshman year was tough,” she said. “I was hopeful but nervous about softball, and it took a toll on my mental health. I had to learn how to navigate things on my own. Over time, I saw myself grow into a better leader and someone who could face fear and stand in front of a crowd to speak.”

After learning about the opportunities available through TMCF and its Leadership Institute, Foster decided to apply. This year, she attended the event for the first time and said it exceeded her expectations.

“The problem-solving and critical-thinking skills I saw in others really inspired me,” she said. “No one was left behind and it felt like a true community.”

As one of the student speakers at Leadership Institute, Chloe gained valuable experience in event logistics and large-scale planning.

“They truly valued my voice,” she said. “It was inspiring to look around and realize I was surrounded by the next generation of leaders. I had a moment where I thought, ‘Wait, I can do that, too. I have my own mark to make.’”

Foster said the conference’s developmental sessions and one-on-one coaching helped her grow as a speaker and boosted her time management skills, lessons she has carried back to campus as she juggles athletics, academics and student organizations.

When asked what advice she would give other students considering TMCF, Foster didn’t hesitate.

“Just go for it! Apply yourself and apply to everything,” she said. “You never know what you’re capable of until you take that first step. Don’t let fear stop you from the endless opportunities TMCF provides.”
