Thurgood Marshall College Fund scholar hopes to feed disadvantaged communities

One Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) scholar hopes to use her animal science degree to feed disadvantaged communities and provide food for her family.

Destiny Haywood, a Langston University animal science major with a focus on agriculture, has been involved at TMCF in several ways. Showcasing her entrepreneurial mindset, she’s participated in the Kroger Zero Waste Innovation ChallengeThe Pitch and the CBRE Innovation Challenge. She’s also the recipient of the 2024-25 Bass Pro Shop and Cabela’s scholarship.   

“The scholarship allowed me to be able to focus on my finals and getting my classes for the next semester without any hesitation because of a bill,” Haywood said.

Haywood said her overall experience with TMCF has been really good.

“My best memories are stressing at 4 a.m. over innovation challenge ideas with strangers that I am now really close with,” Haywood said. “TMCF allowed me to connect with so many different groups and companies. I can think of many experiences that I can call my favorite.”

Haywood said her career aspirations are to own property and start her own homestead. Through her homestead, Haywood said she’d like to sell meat to underprivileged households, as well as supply produce and meat to her own family.
