Thurgood Marshall College Fund launches GivingTuesday campaign

November 27, 2024

In order to support more deserving students, Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) is launching its GivingTuesday campaign ahead of the Dec. 3 day of giving.

GivingTuesday is a global movement to spread generosity that started as a hashtag in 2012 and is now one of the biggest fundraising days of the year for nonprofits like TMCF. More than $3.1 billion was raised in the United States last year on GivingTuesday.

“We are an impactful organization that operates with financial transparency. We make every effort to build trust among our partners and prospective partners to continue our mission of promoting educational excellence and preparing the next generation of workforce talent,” Dr. Harry L. Williams, president & CEO of TMCF, said. “GivingTuesday is a wonderful time to show your support and help shape the future of hundreds of thousands of deserving students.”

This year, TMCF is launching an internal and external campaign beginning Nov. 19. An earlier, coordinated start allows TMCF to maximize opportunities for future leaders at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), historically Black community colleges (HBCCs) and predominantly Black institutions (PBIs).

Internally, employees are participating in the Chiefs Giving Challenge. Employees will raise money within their networks for the chance to earn an additional day of paid time off. Team captains are the chief officers within the organization. There are two ways to win: 1) the team that reaches 100 percent team participation first and 2) the team that raises the most from their networks.

Externally, TMCF is reaching out to friends and partners ahead of and on GivingTuesday in a coordinated effort to raise funding for opportunities like scholarshipsprofessional development and capacity-building to benefit students at TMCF member schools.

TMCF has administered more than $500 million to propel these efforts since its founding in 1987. During that time, it has changed the lives of hundreds of thousands of students. Ninety-three percent of all first-time, full-time undergraduate degree or certificate-seeking students who attend TMCF member schools rely on financial aid in their pursuit of a degree. Generations of low-income families have been elevated to the middle class permanently due to the impact of TMCF support.

Students who receive this support achieve at remarkable high rates. TMCF students have an incredible first-time, full-time freshman retention rate of 97%. Eighty-seven percent of TMCF scholarship recipients go on to earn their degree.
