Dr. Williams Statement on Recent Shootings

August 30, 2023

In light of the recent shootings in Jacksonville, Florida and one on the campus of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill that took the lives of four people over the last few days, Thurgood Marshall College Fund, with heavy hearts, offers its condolences and sends its prayers to the victims and their families impacted by these senseless tragedies.

TMCF condemns these acts of violence and hatred that have taken innocent lives. We must address the urgent issue of shootings that continue to plague our society.

TMCF believes in the power of unity, empathy, understanding, and creating an equitable society. We need to stand shoulder to shoulder, regardless of our backgrounds, and work to dismantle the systemic structures that perpetuate such violence.

Our strength lies in our diversity and by embracing and celebrating our differences we can continue building a harmonious society. After all, in the words of Justice Marshall, “the measure of a country’s greatness is its ability to retain compassion in times of crisis.”
