TMCF urges Congress to allocate at least $1.5 Billion for HBCUs and MSIs

WASHINGTON, DC (March 23, 2020) – The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) applauds Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s unveiling of a plan that would allocate $1.5 Billion in emergency Title III and Title V Aid to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Predominantly Black Institutions (PBIs) and other Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs).

The language unveiled in the Senate bill, last week, includes some helpful regulatory and payment relief for institutions, but simply does not do enough to provide financial relief for schools. The combination of an injection of desperately needed emergency aid, and the loosening of restrictions on both new and previously appropriated Title III funds will allow schools to both recover some of their financial losses and give them the flexibility to best serve students in this uncertain time.

TMCF strongly encourages members of both the House and Senate to work in a bi-partisan fashion to quickly deliver for our nation’s most vulnerable students and these critically-important institutions of higher education.
