RALEIGH, NC – North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper yesterday announced 13 new appointments to various North Carolina boards and commissions, including the North Carolina Board of Education, the North Carolina Industrial Commission, the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina and the North Carolina Council for Women.
“I appreciate the commitment these appointees bring to improving our state,” Gov. Cooper said. “We’re fortunate to have their skills and experience on our state boards and commissions.”
Gov. Cooper appointed the following individual to the North Carolina State Board of Education:
Alan Duncan of Greensboro as the 5th Educational District Representative. Duncan is an attorney and Chair of the Guilford County School Board. Duncan also serves on the Governor’s Commission on Access to Sound Basic Education.
Gov. Cooper appointed the following individual to the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina:
Joan Higginbotham of Charlotte as a member with expertise in the military or defense. Higginbotham is the Director of Corporate Social Responsibility at UTC Aerospace Systems. Previously, she was an Astronaut for NASA and logged more than 300 hours in space.
Gov. Cooper has appointed the following individual to the University of North Carolina Center for Public Television Board of Trustees:
Dr. Charles A. Sanders of Durham as an At-large member. Dr. Sanders is the former CEO and Chairman of the Board for Glaxo, Inc. Previously, Dr. Sanders was General Director of Massachusetts General Hospital and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.
Gov. Cooper has appointed the following individual to the North Carolina State Museum of Natural Sciences Advisory Commission:
Thomas Easley of Raleigh as an At-large member. Easley is currently the Assistant Dean of Community and Inclusion in the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies at Yale University. Previously, he was the Diversity Director and a Professor of Diversity and Environmental Justice at North Carolina State University.
Gov. Cooper appointed the following individual to the North Carolina Banking Commission:
The Honorable Spence Broadhurst of Wilmington as a Practical Banker. Broadhurst is the President of the Eastern NC Region for First National Bank and the former Mayor of Wilmington. He has served on the NC A&T State University Board of Trustees, the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce Board and the Wake County Board of Health.
Gov. Cooper appointed the following individuals to the North Carolina Advisory Committee on Cancer Coordination and Control:
Peggy Abrams of Raleigh as an At-Large member. Abrams is a partner at Abrams and Abrams, P.A. and is a certified superior court mediator. She is a member of the North Carolina Advocates for Justice and serves on the judicial independence committee of the North Carolina Bar Association.
Dr. Vickie Fowler of Chapel Hill as a Primary Care Physician. Fowler is a Primary Care Physician at Duke Primary Care-Hillsborough and a Consulting Associate in the Department of Community and Family Medicine at Duke University.
Gov. Cooper appointed the following individual to the North Carolina Board of Architecture:
Catherine Morrison of Charlotte as an architect. Morrison is a Project Architect at Gresham Smith and Partners. She previously worked as a Project Architect at Gantt Huberman Architects and Bergmann Associates. Morrison specializes in master planning, urban design and healthcare facilities design.
Gov. Cooper appointed the following individuals to the North Carolina Council for Women:
Dr. N. Joyce Payne of Rocky Mount as an At-large member. Dr. Payne is the Senior International Affairs and STEAM advisor to the President of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. She was executive director of the National Alliance for Public Trust and served as a Program Specialist for the National Advisory Council on Women’s Educational Programs.
Dana O’Donovan of Wilmington as an At-large member. O’Donovan is the managing director of the Monitor Institute by Deloitte and a member of the University of North Carolina Kenan Institute’s Board of Mentors. O’Donovan previously served as the Chief Operating Officer of the Monitor Institute.
Gov. Cooper appointed the following individuals to the North Carolina State Board of Cosmetic Art Examiners:
Hope Keith of Raleigh as a Licensed Cosmetologist. Keith has been a licensed cosmetologist for more than forty-five years and served as the Director of Mitchell’s Academy for two years. Keith previously worked at Mitchell’s Hairstyling for more than thirty-eight years.
Rosa D. Martin of Greensboro as a public member. Martin is a patient access specialist at High Point Regional Hospital. Martin is a volunteer at Cone Women’s Hospital and Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.
Gov. Cooper appointed the following individual to the Wilson Community College Board of Trustees:
Charlie Pat Farris of Wilson as an At-large member. Farris is an attorney at Farris & Farris, P.A. Farris previously served on the North Carolina Education and Training Standards Commission and is currently serving on the Wilson Community College Foundation board.
