The TMCF/Walmart Foundation First-Generation Scholars Mentorship Program assists first-generation freshmen with adjusting to the academic and social environment on TMCF member-school campuses. Each year, TMCF awards scholarships to first-generation freshmen and pairs them with qualified student mentors at their schools.
Since the program’s inception in 2012, TMCF has selected and supported over 120 scholars and connected them with over 50 mentors. Each year, TMCF selects outstanding students to mentor as the newly selected group of Walmart Foundation First-Generation Scholars. The primary objective of the program is to provide first-generation college students with role models who give academic and social support, as well as overall college-life guidance that will assist in making the transition from high school to college a success. Mentors are effective resources in helping new college students overcome many of challenges they may face as freshman. Any eligible student on a TMCF member-school campus can apply to become a mentor.
